26 Jul 2008: Team Jaap Stam - Ajax
Ajax fourth pre-season friendly of the preparation campaign is a special one: it's the official 'farewell game' for Jaap Stam. Ajax will play 'Team Jaap Stam' at FC Zwolle's brand new stadium. Kick-off time is 20:30 CET and it's someone else's 'farewell game', too: it's Dick Jol's very last match as a professional referee. He's calling it quits after a dispute with his employer, the KNVB.

This is very sad: the game has been interrupted due to extremely heavy rainfall and a serious thunderstorm (only a couple of seconds between lightning and thunder; referee Dick Jol had no other choice).
This match is the opening game at FC Zwolle's new stadium and it turns out that the ground has many imperfections: the roof of the main stand is leaking and the artificil pitch is in poor condition. The water stays on the pitch and it can't go anywhere. There's a lot of water on the pitch and there's even a very weird 'bubble' on the pitch (because of the water under the turf that can't run away).
Seems like the whole game will have to be called off... Nineteen minutes on the clock.
Very sad for Jaap Stam. Very sad for Dick Jol. Very sad for 11,000 people in attendance (including thousands of Ajax supporters).

Yeah Ajax looks pretty poor. They've had a heavy training in the afternoon, so that is an excuse... but our friend Ogararu is outplayed by Overmars and that's pretty funny to see (if you're not an Ajax supporter).Kowalczyk schreef:13' 1-0 Phillip Cocu.
Ajax not looking good against a bunch of ex-footballers. If the old-timers win, Dennis Bergkamp and Frank de Boer will surely take the piss out of the players tomorrow in training...
K.
Did Bergkamp and de Boer play for Jaap Stam's team? What about Davids did he play also?Kowalczyk schreef:In fact, the whole Ajax team was outplayed by the old-timers (Ajax '95 and Holland '98) and went 3-0 down... Pretty painful...GangstaRiB schreef:our friend Ogararu is outplayed by Overmars and that's pretty funny to see (if you're not an Ajax supporter).

It was a bit embarrassing at times, especially Ogararu vs Overmars. Overmars hasn't played a professional game of football in five years or more, but he made Ogararu look like a complete tit... Ajax went 3-0 down against some of their own coaches (Bergkamp, De Boer, Winter), so they won't hear the last of it today...
Anyway: this wasn't the match to seriously judge Ajax. The rain, the interruption, the fact that it was an 'event' rather than a serious game of football... This one didn't really count. Next week's U.K. friendlies and the Amsterdam Tournament will make clear where Ajax 'stand' at the moment.
What happened to Ajax yesterday is definitely not as embarrassing as what happened to Feyenoord: they drew (1-1) at First Division side FC Dordrecht.
Edit: By the way... this is very sad.

Why...?Prior to yesterday's 'farewell game' for Jaap Stam 90 people were arrested, as the police confirmed. The ones arrested are mostly Ajax supporters, arrested for violent and abusive behaviour.
On their way to Oosterenk Stadium the supporters walked on the roofs of parked cars, causing considerable damage. They also thrashed a pub and started fights. One police officer was injured.
The Ajax supporters behaved very aggressively and the stewards escorting them to the ground could no longer keep them under control. It took 150 police officers to get the group under control and restore the order.

I wasn't sure where else to post this, but here seemed as good as any.
I am seriously getting excited by this season. Haven't felt this positive about an Ajax season for some time.
I am not saying we will win anything, but the signs are positive we are finally heading in the right direction. I just hope we can say the same thing in 6 months, 12 months 18 months etc.
I love this club, and I am tired of it dieing a slow death. Hopefully this season brings in the cure the club needed.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed in the last few posts.
A HUGE FUCK YOU to the thugs masquerading as "Ajax Fans" for their actions Saturday. Nail them all with the maximum penalty allowed by Dutch law.
Fuck them also for taking the attention away from where it should be focused. Namely on a football club that really looks like it's trying to take large steps forward, Saturday's Stamtacular not withstanding.
Thank you to Ajax for really trying to take steps to improve the club. I too am getting more excited by the day.

There was a nice article in a newspaper today stating the bar-owner in question: "The police started the riot. Everything was okay that evening and everybody was behaving good. Then all of the sudden the police and anti-riot squad surrendered the bar and then it all went wrong."Blind3 schreef:I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed in the last few posts.

I'm barely able to admit it to myself after the failures of the last few years, but secretly I completely agree with you.DanK schreef:I wasn't sure where else to post this, but here seemed as good as any.

OK, well anyone who saw the game will have seen the shirt but I hadn't.

It's certainly an "interesting" design......

It's got the club crests of all the clubs he played for:
DOS Kampen
FC Zwolle
Cambuur Leeuwarden
Willem II
PSV
Manchester United
Lazio Roma
AC Milan
Ajax
... and the lion of the KNVB, of course.
The idea behind it is nicer than the shirt itself, as you'd expect, but it's surely a 'one off' collector's item. I don't know whether it was commercially available at the match or not. I'd expect it was, as the testimonial was a fundraiser for KiKa (Children Cancer Prevention foundation), so they must have sold replicas at the ground in order to raise money.
Jaap Stam's original one (the one he actually wore, with #3) was auctioned on eBay, with all the cash being donated to KiKa. Don't know how much it 'did'.

The shirt is for sale online too (€ 49.95) if anyone is interested. Here's the direct link, which you can also get to through Jaap's site:

Quite a lot so far - the auction is linked straight from the front of Ebay.NLKowalczyk schreef:
