Summer break... Wonderful. I've said it before and I will say it again: after such a long, long season, supporters need a break just as badly as the players...

Ajax will go back in training on Monday 09 July (or Tuesday 10 July; I'm not 100% sure). Their first friendly kickabout of the new season is normally somewhere in Amsterdam, against one of the city's many amateur sides, but this year is slightly different. The first opponent is VVSB, the local pride of Noordwijkerhout, a small town in the province of Zuid-Holland.

You're absolutely right: first training is on 05 July.

They're doing things slightly differently. Normally they go back in training on a Monday or Tuesday - and then play their first friendly (in or near Amsterdam) on the following Saturday, after five days or so of basic training. This year they'll spend some extra days on the training pitch (eight or nine) before playing the first friendly.

Also: the string of friendlies against amateur sides does not seem as long as usual (which I believe is a good thing; last year there were too many).
