Arsenal America have "challenged" Ajax USA to an indoor 5-a-side tournament at Chelsea Piers in New York City, on the date of Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial match at Highbury in London: July 22.

It's a really nice idea; sort of a hugely classed up version of the De Cler Cup against the Cockney Cloggies. (Don't ask.)

The game requires that we field a team of nine players. Arsenal America will reserve the field and front the money for the facility rental, but we have to let them know by June 23 if we can field a team.

I'd love to go (and live only a few hours away), but I'm still about five months away from being able to run. :(

Doesn't look likely. I haven't received a single email about this, and there's just the one individual here in the bboard saying he's available.

Nice idea, but we're just not that organizized...

People had three days to read the message (here or on Ajax USA) and decide... That's not a lot of time. Maybe we can set up a little indoor football tourney in NYC for next summer or something.

Should be possible to organize something like that: American fanclubs of Ajax, Arsenal, Man Utd, Celtic and Juventus shouldn't be that hard to find.

Right. It's short notice, which is entirely my fault. Rick at Arsenal America has been requesting action from me on this for quite a while, but it never got to the "take action" level for me until just this week...

I have no doubt that there are many Ajax fans in the greater NY area. Unfortunately, since Ajax USA is not really a member-based club, so we don't have "member data" and cannot therefore determine how many "members" live where, and we can't message to them specifically.

All that may change soon, but for now, we're kind of flying blind...

Hmm, I was thinking about it considering one of my buddies on my club team was probably going to go play for the Arsenal America team. But still, I'm not really sure if I could even get the time off work for it in July anyways...

I could probably make it up there next year. I think my knee should be healed by then, and I could probably go up and back in a day.

Just so you people know, Ajax USA beat Arsenal USA in the Bergkamp Cup in NY.

In the first half we were leading 9-3 or something. In the second half, one of the Arsenal guys we had loaned returned to the Arsenal team. So essentially we were playing 5 against 7 & we won by 6 goals....lost count by the end of the game.

It was great fun & I think we should think about making this a yearly thing.
