World Cup national anthems!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the official World Cup national anthems thread! In this thread you can post the words to your nations' anthem - and provide us with an English translation (the English, Americans and Australians are free to translate their national anthem into a language of their choice... :D ;) ).

Allow me to officially open this thread with the words to the Dutch national anthem, known as het Wilhelmus. It is basically a long poem of fifteen verses, sung from the perspective of William of Orange, the man generally considered as the 'founder of The Netherlands'.
Wilhelmus van Nassouwe ben ik, van Duitschen bloed
Den vaderland getrouwe blijf ik tot in den doed
Een Prinse van Oranje ben ik, vrij, onverveerd
De koning van Hispanje heb ik altijd geëerd
Yup, only four lines, but it has a very slow melody, so it's longer than God Save The Queen anyway... Translation!
William of Nassau am I, of Germanic blood
Loyal to my fatherland I will stay until I die
A Prince of Orange am I, free and unafraid,
The King of Spain I have always honoured
Two things need some explanation. First of all: many people, even in Holland, find it extremely weird that the words van Duytschen bloed (in modern Dutch: van Duitsen bloed) are in the first line. In modern language these words mean 'of German blood'. WTF??

What William of Orange sings, however, is not 'of German blood' but 'of Germanic blood'. Which was a generic name back in those days for the Dutch, German and Flemish peoples.

Secondly: 'the King of Spain I have always honoured?' Once again: WTF??

Holland was occupied by Spain in the 16th century. William of Orange was initially loyal to the King of Spain (Carl the Fifth). However, when Carl died and his son Philip the Second became the new king, William of Orange became the big leader of the Protestant resistance of the Dutch and, essentially, the man to win the war against Spain, liberate The Netherlands and create the independent nation we still know today.

Wilhelmus is a song of fifteen verses and it is basically William of Orange telling his lifestory. In this verse (the first one) he tells us that he was once loyal to the King of Spain. In the later verses he will explain why he changed his mind and pretty much became a Dutch nationalist. But the first verse is the verse that has now become to national anthem, so the 'loyal to the King of Spain' bit is the only thing we sing these days.

And here's the polish national anthem - Mazurek Dąbrowskiego . It was written in 1797 by Józef Wybicki (politician and writer). I'll write down only first verse and chorus, because it's the part of anthem which is singing during the official occasions (including football games).
Jeszcze Polska nie zginęła
Kiedy my żyjemy
Co nam obca przemoc wzięła
Szablą odbierzemy

Marsz, marsz Dąbrowski
Z ziemi włoskiej do Polski
Za twoim przewodem
Złączym się z narodem
And here's the translation into english:
Poland is not lost yet
while we live
What a foreign force has taken from us
We shall take back with the sword.

March, march Dąbrowski
From Italy to Poland
Under your command
We will reunite with the nation
* Dąbrowski is a national hero - he is founder of polish legions in Italy. Brave defender of Warsaw in 1794, chosen the commander of polish army by Napoleon Bonaparte.

I wish my country could be in this list but I'll have to wait for the next world cup (we've been waiting 26 years...). Anyway, go to this website if you want to download the anthems

Well this is the Aussie national anthem, but first a little bit of history (my thanks to the Australian Govt Site for the copy/paste!) and some ad-lib from myself :D

‘Advance Australia Fair' is the national anthem of Australia. A revised version of a late nineteenth century patriotic song, it was officially declared the national anthem on 19 April 1984, previously it was the British anthem 'God save the Queen' (or King I guess depending on who is in charge). This is obviously due to the countries history with the Poms (and why our flag still has the Union Jack - much to the annoyance of a lot of people i might add).

After many years of votes & polls etc, Australian's finally decided to have our own identity and Adv Aust Fair kicked GStQ's Royal backside so then come April 1984 the Governor-General issued a proclamation declaring that ‘God Save the Queen' was designated the Royal Anthem, to be played at public engagements in Australia attended by the Queen or members of the Royal family. ‘Advance Australia Fair' was finally declared to be the national anthem, and non-sexist words adopted.

Usually ‘God Save the Queen' is played at the start of Royal functions and ‘Advance Australia Fair' at the end, unless it is more appropriate to play both anthems at the start.

And onto the lyrics...
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

For 99.9% of people this is the end of the anthem we know and what is generally played at sporting events etc, yet for some reason there is another part and whenever it makes its odd appearance, no-one knows what to say and we just start singing the first part again, or get restless and just start cheering the team already. Anyway, to make it offical, here is the rest (again, that nobody but dorks know).

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Was that the Polish revolution? I thought the Poles had a revolution like the French, but it was removed by a Russian invasion. Same with 1831, no? Didn't many Poles fight for Bonaparte against Russia because he had promised them independence or something?

Yep... This revolution was against Russians. And - as usual - we didn't have many soldiers to fight, because our army was very small that time (and Russians decided to limit our army to 50% - it was one of the reasons why revolution started). Poland didn't have independence that time after 2nd divide, and Kościuszko's revolution was one of the revolutions that wanted to break away from the slavery. Russians stopped the revolution and after that there was 3rd divide of Poland. Our country vanished from the Europe's maps and the rest of our soldiers had to do something to rebirth. France seemed to be the best solution, so most of polish soldiers joined french army, which had success in a war against Austria. There was a plan that Poles will help Napoleon in a war against Austria and then France would help us to rebuild Poland. Thanks to his help Poland had a small Warsaw Princedom... It was 1/4 of former Poland, but for Poles it was a sign that it's beginning of a better life. Then there were a few othe revolutions - November 1830, Kraków 1846, January 1863 etc. We haven't won any revolution and we had to wait till 1918 for independence.

Speaking of anthems. I noticed that the scots just whistled and booed over the french anthem. I thought british people had respect for history and culture. Obviously I was wrong.

Now I hope will give them gingers a good old trashing.

This is the Armenian National Anthem, Manucharyan would have been singing this in the 0-0 match against Finland.

This anthem is fairly old and new at the same time it has been adapted for the independence from Russia in 1991, however it is mainly about the struggles the country endured from the Genocide commited by the Ottoman Empire (Turkey).

The first anthem is in Armenian with english letters so you can pronounce it, I don't have an Armenian keyboard to write it in Armenian.

MER HAYRENIK

Verse 1
Mer Hayrenik, azad angakh,
Vor abrel eh tareh tar
Ir vor tika art ganchoom eh
Azad, angakh haiasdan.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 2
Aha yeghpair kez mi trosh,
Vor im tzerkov kordzetzi
Keeshernera yes koon chega,
Ardasoonkov luvatzi.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 3
Nayir neran yerek kooynov,
Nuviragan mer nushan,
Togh poghpoghi tushnamoo tem,
Togh meesht bandza Hayastan.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 4
Amenayn degh maha mi eh
Mart mee ankam bid merni,
Paytz yerani vor ir azki
Azadootyan ga tzohvi.
[Repeat last two lines]

[Repeat Verse 1]

OUR FATHERLAND

Verse 1
Our fathertherland, free and independent,
That lived from century to century
His children are calling
Free independent Armenia.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 2
Here brother, for you a flag,
That I made with my hands
Nights I didn't sleep,
With tears I washed it.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 3
Look at it, three colours
It's our gifted symbol.
Let it shine against the enemy.
Let Armenia always be glorious.
[Repeat last two lines]

Verse 4
Everywhere death is the same
Everyone dies only once
But lucky is the one
Who is sacrificed for his nation.
[Repeat last two lines]

[Repeat Verse 1]

Pretty much all British countries (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) boo the opposing national anthem. I have witnessed it first hand, the boos and whistles totally blur out the national anthem.

Was at the game with Ko and yes unfortunately this did happen. But being honest it was only a few people who booed and this did not last long - should not happen at all I know. The vast majority of the crowd did applaud the French anthem so please dont make sweeping generalisations based on the antics of a few idiots. And where do you get this ginger thing from - eh.

Speaking of stupid things that happened that day, didnt the French manager make a right arse of himself after the match by trying to blame the French defeat on the slowness of the ballboys.

The French were a far superior team but at the end of the day we stuck the ball into the back of the net and they didnt - voila result.

Eh think if you did a little bit of research you would find out that the Scottish football team have only been beaten once in their last 11 away matches - and that was a 2-0 defeat by Italy in Milan when Italy scored from 2 free kicks. Of the other 10 matches - 6 were victories and 4 draws.

So hope that answers your question :D

Yeah - it's one thing I hate about the Holland fans. 'We' (?) always boo during the visitors' national anthems and after that we don't sing our own national anthem but give some drunken, out of tune, stupid, carnvalesque rendition of it (words: la la la la).

F**king hate it, and it's one of many reasons why I never go to Holland games.

I think I've been to three Holland games in my whole life: a friendly against Yugoslavija because it was at De Meer (1989 or so), a friendly against Germany (at the ArenA, 2-1 win, probably around five years ago) and a qualifier against Cyprus in Eindhoven (4-0, with Ajax USA).

I've see almost as many Scotland home games now (namely: two). An extremely boring one (Norway, 0-1, probably two years ago) and one of the best ever (last Saturday against France). I absolutely love the passion of the Scots. The atmopshere was absolutely electric. Okay: there was some booing during the French anthem, but it wasn't too bad and not too long. It definitely wasn't like the whole ground was booing.

Before the game we were at this fantastic supporters' party at a place named The Shed. There were many French fans there as well and the chairman of the fanclub even got the microphone and spoke to the Scottish fans, calling them "the best fans in the world" and thanking them for the hospitality. Friendship all around. Absolutely wonderful.

righto, done some research. To be fair, I don't think friendlies count as real matches (creditable as that win over estonia was). Then in their last 12 real (euro/WC qualifying) away matches Scotland has 4 wins, 4 draws, 4 losses.

none of the wins (iceland, slovenia, lithuania, norway) or even the draws(belarus, austria, moldova :aai: , or faroe islands :drecul2:) have come against higher ranked teams. losses to germany, holland and italy are understandable, but lithuania? come on.

I went right back to 1990, and in all that time, Scotland has 1 away win vs what could be regarded as a 'top' team. 1-0 vs england in 1999, which counted for nothing as it was a play-off and they had already lost the home leg 0-2.

So, Scotland's away record is shit, to be honest. But to be fair, they are on the improve after a few dismal years, so good luck to them.

I'll save jamcocteau a purple faced rant ;) and point out that Lithuania did draw away to World champs ( or should that be chumps?) Italy in a very recent Euro qualifier.

Whether the wins were in friendlies or whatever is irrelevant to me - you asked a question and I rightly pointed out that are recent away record is not that bad/

And once again you are not doing research are you - the wins against both Slovenia and Norway were against higher ranked teams - Slovenia were seeded no 2 in that world cup group and Norway seeded no 3 whilst Scotland were seeded 4th - if that was not wins against higher ranked teams then what is. Scotland 2 years ago under that German clown Vogts were ranked 89th in the World and have risen to 39th since Walter Smiths appointment.

The defeat against Lithuania you mention was years back and a last minute penalty - the win last month was against the Lithuania team who had drawn with Italy in Italy 4 days earlier.

Yes our record since 1990 away has been poor but that was then and this is now. At this moment we are the only country apart from Sweden to have full points from 3 games - myself and DWS whilst not expecting to qualify even, are quite proud that our team that were to be honest absolute shit 2 years ago are at this moment in time 5 points ahead of the World Champions and 3 points ahead of the runners up. I dont expect to be there at the end of qualifying but at this moment in time I think there are many countries supporters would like to be in Scotlands position.

As I say there wasnt that much booing and most of it came from the West Stand next to the French support which was where this video was shot. People who boo anthems are clowns - full stop.

Now this video is far better DWS

Friendlies aren't real games. No-one takes them seriously, and you are allowed extra subs.

Fair point about rankings, I was using current world rankings to judge that. Still, an away win over a top 20 side would be what really puts your team back in contention to compete in real competitions.

Whether a loss is due to a last minute penalty is irrelevant. A loss is a loss. The win against Slovenia came 4 days after Slovenia lost in Italy. Slovenia had only taken 5 points out of their last 5 games, 3 of those from a win against Moldova. Does that make that win less creditable than the win over Lithuania?

Germany, Czech Republic, Greece and Turkey all have perfect records, though only czechs have played 3 games.

I did already acknowledge that Scotland were improving, and I would like nothing more than to see you knock off Italy and France as I hate both those teams.
