He doesn't have any other way. He will be the most known and most experienced Ajacied next season (unless we buy Davids). I hope that he'll do his best in defence.

His experience alone is a great addition. Especially considering that THE MUMMY's career experience at top league level(i.e. Eredivisie or Premier League or Serie A or ...you get the point) is probably equal to or more than four players who played significant minutes for Ajax last year; Emanuelson, Vermaelen, Boakye and Heitinga ;combined.
Looking forward to watching Jaap Stam play. I do think he is the most logical choice to wear the Captain's armband. :xyxthumbs: Second choice is Heitinga or Lindenbergh.

In a recent interview Henk ten Cate said something like: "Jaap will be the 'natural leader' of the team. You don't have to give him the captain's armband for that."orange goblin schreef:In your opinion will Jaap be our new skipper?
He also said that Stam has experience and a natural type of leadership, but that he is not much of a talker on the pitch.
My gut feeling is that he will make Sneijder captain - but that Stam is the man all the youngsters will look up to.

I have often wondered why people see players like Stam and Davids somehow able to guide and coach younger players. Just because you are an experienced player does not automatically mean that you can coach your collegues.ajaxperu schreef:haha yeah, "la momia Stam" :D
He is going to help our defense a lot, not only by intimidating opponents but by helping our other defenders and becoming a sort of "teacher" for them. If we could get Davids in the midfield it would really be a dream team for us.
Stam is good at neutralizing an attacker but he is not someone who organises the defense. Davids is a useful midfielder but he totally goes up into his own game. Not much coaching to be expected from there either.
Both these players have to focus on their own play in order to be useful. I never saw them showing the ambition to be leaders in any of their teams in the past. If they are forced to take on such a role at Ajax it may prove a big mistake.

I always thought of Stam as more vocal and fiery. My mistake. If Stam is a more quiet, lead by example and work ethic type as opposed to a vocal Chivu-esque presence(my choice), he'd probably not be the right choice after all. I do remember Johnny Heitinga as captain of Jong Ajax.Don't know how vocal he is,but at least he has led a side and marshalled a defence.

Great way to put it.Blind3 schreef:If Stam is a more quiet, lead by example and work ethic type as opposed to a vocal Chivu-esque presence(my choice), he'd probably not be the right choice after all.
Heitinga I wouldn't choose since he is not even certain of a spot in the starting line-up. If nobody else joins the team I would go for Sneijder or Huntelaar.

You need to be a good player to be able to go through and leave Stam behind, but you also need to have guts. Look at that guy, he is evil man! imagine being fouled by Stam, I'd say at least a couple of months in the hospital ;)
so cool to have a defender like that in our team!

Yes, he picks a lot of yellow cards, but - in my opinion - other players won't get a card for some of the fouls he commited. He is tall and looks very dangerous, so a few referees gave him a card almost for nothing... Anyway, it's good to have Stam in defensive line :worshippy: .Kowalczyk schreef:Jaap Stam has picked up four yellow cards so far. One more and he will be automatically suspended for one game.
