Excellent signing. NEC is the one side I've seen Ajax play more than once, with Gentenaar in goal, and he was great. Given Stekelenberg's penchant for injury, great to have such a quality reserve. And actually a keeper who can push Stekelenberg.

I don't think he is much better goalkeeper than Lobont was and Stekelenburg is, but one thing is sure- he doesn't make stupid mistakes as they do. He is experienced player and I won't be surprised if he became our first keeper.
PS: have you seen ice hockey game Czech Republic vs Switzerland on Olympic Games in Torino? Maybe we should buy Aebischer from Colorado Avalanche? ;)

I think Dennis Gentenaar will regret the things he said about Van Basten's decision to make Kenneth Vermeer the 'second second goalkeeper'...
Van Basten's first reaction was already a subtle hint: "Before I say anything about it I want to speak to Dennis himself. I only read it in the media and I'm not going to discuss things via the media."
The next day: "Whatever it was that Dennis said, he should have said it to me first. Not to a journalist."
After that he had a sitdown with Gentenaar. What did they discuss? "That's between Dennis and me," Van Basten said.
Will this have consequences for Gentenaar, asked some journo. Van Basten's answer: "You will find out soon enough."
Couple of hours later it turns out that Vermeer is the second man for the Feyenoord game. He was also on the bench in Belgrade, whereas Van Basten had announced that they Gentenaar and Vermeer will be the reserve goalie in turns...
I think he's fucked. Wouldn't surprise me if he's off in January. Having said that: if (I repeat: if) Gentenaar's version of the story is correct, he definitely has a point.
This is the full interview from Amsterdam newspaper, Het Parool...

If this is the true story, Gentenaar did talk to Van Basten first. And I would also agree with him that it's a weird decision. But: we all know how football players (and their agents) can 'use' the media. They only worry about their own careers and they're normally very good at 'forgetting' a detail or two. We don't know, but I think Van Basten will have no mercy. With this interview I think Gentenaar has pretty much fucked things up for himself.Ajax's third goalkeeper, Kenneth Vermeer, is in the squad as second goalkeeper for the UEFA Cup away game against FK Borac. Dennis Gentenaar, who will now stay at home, is not pleased about the fact that he will have to share the position of first reserve from now on. "I think it's amateuristic and I don't see how this is supposed to work."
"Van Basten wants us to be on the bench in turns," Gentenaar explains. "Perhaps I'll do the home games and Kenneth the away games or something. I don't know what the exact plan is."
One thing is for sure: Gentenaar disagrees with his coach. "Van Basten told me that Vermeer was too inconsistent at Willem II last season [Vermeer was loaned out to the Tilburg outfit, ed.], but that he did well for Young Oranje at the Olympics. He also said: Vermeer is not far behind you anymore, but he's not at your level yet. So apparently he still thinks that I'm the better goalkeeper."
"So I asked him why I can't be second goalkeeper anymore. Van Basten said that that would make Kenneth Vermeer a very unhappy man. I find that amateuristic. Is that supposed to be the 'top climate' at this club? You simply pick the best players, don't you? I find it ironic that he's concerned about Vermeer's feelings, but not about mine."
"I don't see how this should work, either. What if Maarten Stekelenburg picks up an injury? Am I gonna play the one week and Vermeer the next? Van Basten simply doesn't choose."
Gentenaar is convinced that Van Basten was influenced by the media. "After the Olympics all the papers and magazines were writing that it was odd that vermeer was only the third man at Ajax. Van Basten must have been thinking about that. I'm sure of that. I mean: isn't it weird that he suddenly decides this in mid-September?"
"I was interested in a contract renewal, but it's clear to me now: I have to think about my own future. Even a transfer in January is not out of the question."

I love vB's ruthlessness. Players need to learn to keep their mouths shut and to stop being sooks.Kowalczyk schreef:Vermeer will be in goal against Borac tonight. Sergio Padt will be on the bench. No Gentenaar.
Vermeer was also the second man behind Stekelenburg against Vitesse and Feyenoord.
Van Basten's statement is quite clear: Gentenaar's finished.

Agree. One of the problems Ajax have had is too many primadonnas. I get the sense that Marco doesn't mind a player having a bit of an ego (in fact, he probably encourages it) but it shouldn't interfere with the team.
I must say, I'm liking him more and more with each passing day.

According to newspaper Algemeen Dagblad Ajax have promised Dennis Gentenaar to look out for a new third goalie. If they find one, Gentenaar will be allowed to leave. If they don't find one, he'll have to stay.
Gentenaar seems well pissed off by this whole affair. He says that Ajax knew he wanted to leave in January, and that it's not fair that he is now the victim of the fact that Ajax let Hans Vonk go.
Again, in all honesty, I have to say that he has a point, kind of. He's not making things easy for himself, but I can't say he's talking bollocks.

He does have a point, but if he would have kept his mouth shut in the first place he probably would have been allowed to go instead of Vonk. I can't imagine he's attracting too many suitors with his attitude and he's certainly not with Ajax.
I agree with the club, though, no need to let him go if we don't have a better 3rd goalie. Hopefully Padt can take that spot over and then Gentenaar can go, that would probably be best for everyone.
