Juanfran
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we've got him!
Well, not really, actually: Ajax have landed Juanfran from Besiktas on loan until season's end, but we have an option to buy him.
This is great news!
News report is up on Ajax USA now...

Double thumbs up to Danny Blind, etc.. for what looks an inspired move. I had the pleasure of watching Juanfran on GOL TV during several of his years with Celta. I like his passion for the game and his leadership; not to mention his quality. I don't think I've enjoyed a signing THISMUCH since Jari's return. No offence to other lads who've signed on, but a bonafide Spanish International calibre left back in his prime? Nice move. I do wish it'd been done pre-8/4 or whenever the CL squad's drop-dead day was, but that's water under the bridge.

I was thinking the same thing, but apparently we've got it all wrong (I don't understand these UEFA rules...).Blind3 schreef:I do wish it'd been done pre-8/4 or whenever the CL squad's drop-dead day was, but that's water under the bridge.
In a report on Ajax.nl Martin van Geel is quoted saying: "He didn't play in Europe with Besiktas so far this season, so he's eligible for Ajax in UEFA competition. Not against Brøndby, as that deadline has already passed."
So, apparently, there's a deadline for the qualifiers and a new deadline for the group phase...? Didn't know that, but it's good news for us, in this case.

Here are some pictures from his first training session (today):

He hasn't trained for a while, so he'll need a few weeks to get match fit. For that reason he'll be following a special training program in his first weeks.

At the ArenA he was completely knocked out, but somehow he made a complete recovery and then proceeded to take us apart - thought then that this man really had some bottle and no-little skillZoefdeHaas schreef:
I remmeber Juan when he played against Ajax in Europe, not bad either

The quote on ajaxusa brings a question .... Interesting paragraph from an article in Het Parool...
Apart from his football qualities Juanfran also has some vocal talent. In Operación Triunfo, the Spanish equivalent of TV shows such as American Idol (U.S.), PopIdol (U.K.) or Idols (Holland), the left fullback was the only player of the Spanish squad who had the courage to sing a song to millions of viewers. Juanfran chuckles: "The coach said to me: if you don't sing, you won't play. So I decided to sing."

that's what I like to read :
"It's an honour to play for this club and to wear the shirt. I see the loan as a first step, I hope to stay here longer. When I played against Ajax with Celta de Vigo, I was really impressed with the atmosphere in the stadium and the fans. Ajax is a big club and I hope to get back in the national team of Spain when I play here."

Appie, stay strong !
Hey franotica. Nice to see our new man has fans in such exotic places as Brasil. I remember him mostly as part of a strong offensive Celta left wing that gave us many problems both at home and away. Quite happy to have him on board from now on. What I remember less are his defensive skills. Can you tell me something more about that?
