Well, uh, good luck. Those fans are not nearly as moderate as Chelsea's or Ajax's.

Interesting, and I'm guessing that Yannis speaks a bit more Dutch than HtC does Greek. I've no real feelings about HtC but I do wish King Yannis well....

Interesting little interview with Frits Barend, one of Holland's most prominent sports journalists, in today's de Volkskrant. Here's an excerpt.
"I always thought Van Basten was a great guy to interview. I always enjoyed his press conferences and somehow and I found it painful to find him a bad coach. But now, Van Basten had the courage to look into the mirror without any bitterness. He was the first to admit he'd failed."

The man who always seemed to have an aura of invincibility in his days as a striker, had now lost all of his magic. "Marco was sitting there, wearing a simple, blue sweater," says Barend. "Not a jacket or a suit. I could see Marco sitting at home, wearing his slippers, Liesbeth and the kids by his side, on the couch. I can understand how you want to live a simple, small life, after having been a superstar. Van Basten always knew that glamour is phoney. That blue sweater fascinated me. He was sitting there as a very simple man and that was what gave him an overwhelming dignity at that moment. I thought it was very moving, I wanted to applaud him."

Van Basten's sense of dignity contrasts sharply with Louis van Gaal's relations with the media, says Barend. "The effect I have on him seems to be that of a red cloth on a bull. Louis failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup with Holland and I asked him, in a very friendly and calm way: do you think you made mistakes yourself, Louis? He was outraged. How did I dare ask him that? In those days Van Gaal was a bad example to his players, in my opinion. He was their alibi to behave like total jerks in the media. I do believe Van Gaal is a man of morals and values, but journalists never get to experience that. At the moment he's boycotting the NOS [the Dutch BBC] and Eredivisie Live again. We should all consider to show solidarity and say: alright, let's all boycott Louis van Gaal then. But that's not how it works, in practice."

Er...

Perhaps just another case of negotiating in the press, but I imagine that if AZ are truly not willing to let Van Gaal go to Bayern, they're certainly not going to let him go to Ajax.

Cruyff himself said this week in an Italian newspaper that Van Basten had the skills for the job, so...
But it seems that such move was ruled out by both Van Basten and AC Milan.

Ronald Koeman to join AZ!

That is fantastic news in two different ways.

1. He's not coming to Ajax

2. He's going to AZ

Once again he will slowly but surely destroy the fantastic work of a great predecessor. It won't show just yet in his first season, but after that the rotting process will kick in - and then he'll probably resign at some point during his second season, just before they would have fired him anyway. And he will leaving a big fucking pile of smoking crap, like he always does (ask Ajax, ask PSV, ask Valencia).

Great news. Wonderful. Co: come on now, mate. Just sign that Ajax contract. It's waiting for you.

I agree with you totally here Menno.

Next season will still be fine (maybe), but its the one after that will screw AZ over. I am relived he isn't joining us. That's one positive already for the new season.

Marco resigned pretending he was not good enough for the job. And now he might become the coach of AC Milan. That was a good laugh ....

There is a big difference between Ajax and Milan. Rijkaard did very poorly at Sparta but did an amazing job at Barca. We need a different type coach then what is required at Milan. It is possible that he could end up doing a good job there.

MVB can coach a star studded team, in fact i think milan is well suited for his style, i remember the oranje playing like milan (except in euro 08)....who knows maybe he turns out alright for them. The press are going to have a good time with his direct answers...i'm just speculating off course since this is just a rumour.

MvB may have been ill suited to a young Ajax squad, but he might do quite a bit better with a team of established stars who know what they need to do to succeed.

It would kinda suck if he goes to AC Beckham and covers himself in glory, though.... :sneaky1.gif:

I wanted him, but I'm actually feeling pretty optimistic about BMJ. (And, in a different way, about Koeman at AZ. :biggrin.gif: )

Of course, just about every summer I manage to convince myself that THIS will be our year... but one of these years I'm bound to be right, right?

Right??? :blush.gif:

No he didn't. Rijkaard is a new Galatasaray coach. And it's actually a little bit shocking. From Barca, to Galatasaray..
