R.I.P., Joop Stoffelen...

Bericht door Kowalczyk » za jun 25, 2005 11:55 pm

A great Ajacied has left us.

Joop Stoffelen, a born and raised Amsterdammer, made his début in Ajax-1 on 24 March 1940 against KFC, just before Nazi forces invaded The Netherlands. He had 193 league performances for Ajax, in which he netted 22 times. After his last game in Ajax-1, on 26 November 1950 at SC Enschede he moved to France, where Racing Club de Paris had offered him a contract as a professional. In France he would also play for Toulouse. Between 1947 and 1950 Stoffelen played 12 matches for Holland.

After his player career Joop Stoffelen coached the team known as the 'Ex-Internationals' for many years. This team of former Oranje internationals plays an annual friendly demonstration game on New Year's Day against Holland's oldest football club, the Royal HFC from Haarlem. Stoffelen had to call it quits in 1992, because he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Mr Stoffelen passed away today, 84 years old, at his house in Lelystad.

September 1990

Bericht door Kowalczyk » do sep 01, 2005 9:38 am

It's September 1st and time for a new 15 Years Ago installment, but I'm too busy at the moment. Can't get it done. It will have to wait for a few more days -- but it's coming.

September 1990

Bericht door Kowalczyk » do sep 29, 2005 11:23 pm

Better late than never...

For the first time in more than three years we did not publish a 15 Years Ago... installment on the first of a new month. I just couldn't get it done by 01 September. Too busy. But now it's online: the September 1990 installment!

http://www.ajax-usa.com/history/fifteen ... -1990.html

The October installment will be available on 01 October. It's all back to normal now.

... and another installment!

We're back in the normal rhythm: it's October 1st, so here's the October 1990 chapter!

Pictures will be added to the story a.s.a.p. (next few days). I don't have a scanner at home, so I will have to bike down to my sister and scan a bunch of photos for the next few months...

Righty: we have just added two Ajax vs PSV pictures to the October installment. They're cool, so you should take a look.

Thanks for the great read.

I've been meaning to ask you, where do you get the material for the insallments? Now it can't be all in your head, can it?

The information is from my Ajax 'library' (you've actually spent a night right next to it on an air mattress  ). I've got a pretty good Ajax book collection that helps me to reconstruct things. When I do that I actually do start remembering a lot of things, though. When I see the match statistics of games, I suddenly remember goals and stuff.

When I started doing 15 Years Ago (February 2002... about 1987) I didn't remember that much, but now (1989-1990) I remember almost everything for the simple reason that I started going to De Meer very frequently in that season. I was at the Ajax vs PSV game in October 1990 and I can still see Pettersson convert that penno. I remember it very, very clearly, from my exact angle (section Q of the Olympic, at the time).

It's great fun to write this stuff, because memores are coming back to me while writing it.

The November 1990 installment of 15 Years Ago was published by Jim, while I was in Switzerland. That's why it was impossible for me to inform you on the day of publication that this month's pictures are from the collection of our good friend 343. I am doing that now. Thanks very much for scanning them up for us!

I think the scanners are good, but don't forget that these pictures are scanned from a 15 year old newspaper, Paarse Koe!

Here's the story...

I couldn't find any pictures from November 1990, so I posted a message to one of the Dutch language history threads here on Ajax Talk. Turned out that 343 had some old newspaper clippings from November 1990. He scanned 'em up for me. Obviously the pictures are '15-year-old-newspaper-quality', but they're the best we could find for this month. For next month I have good pictures again (from books). I don't think there's anything wrong with the scanner I normally use, but I appreciate your offer, Cow!

Re-posting...
neilg schreef:Can anyone give me the Ajax cup final squad numbers for the match with Den Haag? I have been given the number 15 Ajax shirt by Tony Morley who played and scored for Den Haag. He exchanged it at the end of the match but cannot remember which player gave it him. I would love to know, can anyone help me.
Welcome to the forum, neilg. I have re-posted your post here, because this is the most appropriate thread for history-related questions and comments. The Match of the Day zone is for discussions about current games only... Hope you understand.

Hmmm, you deleted all the posts, Ko?

Well, during the EC2-finale of 1987 Scholten wore the nr.16 jersey and Bergkamp wore the nr. 15...

These 2 players were also a couple of weeks later the substitutes in the Cup Final, so.....i'm not a hundred percent certain...
