Why do you ask?

There's a city in NZ called Hamilton. I was just curious as to whether using 'ham' as a sort of prefix changed its meaning. Anyway, the official explanantion here is that Hamilton was named after a certain captain Hamilton who was killed fighting the Maori.

For a while, Ajax youngsters all seemed to score at their debut. A tradition that now no longer seems to exist. Does anyone know who the last player was who did score at his official debut in Ajax 1? My guess is that it was during the days that Cruijff was coach, but I honestly don't know.

Kluivert and Wooter both did it in the first match of the '94/'95 season. Kluivert scored earlier, so the last one would be Nordin Wooter.

It's more than 10 years ago, so it can't be called a tradition anymore X'C

This isn't really Ajax Trivia but it follows on from our discussion on Dutch pronunciation. Something I've been curious about but have never asked anyone - our old "friend" Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Please can someone explain that surname. The "of" sounds very English but I assume it's not - my Dutch/English dictionary gives two very obscure looking meanings in Dutch. Also, I've heard him referred to as both "Vennegoor" and "Hesselink", which is correct.

Like I said, very obscure and trivial, just something that bugs me every time I see the name.

From my little understanding of Dutch names i also find this one interesting. How did the 'of' get in between those names?

I always thought in 'true' Dutch it would be Jan Vennegoor van Hesselink (which would more closely translate to Vennegoor from Hesselink.

I would also think his family name (way back when) would have originally been Vennegoor and his family originated from Hesselink.

At least I think thats how it normally works.

Is this one also true?

I asked this question months ago, thanks for the answers guys but VoH has actually answered himself in todays papers (he is looking for a transfer to Celtic). Apparently "a couple of centuries ago, we are going back to the time of Napoleon, there were two big farms in the area where I was born - one belonged to the family Vennegoor, the other to the family Hesselink. Both farms and families became one as some of the members got married to each other. They decided to use both names".

The KNVB is currently studying the possibility of starting a special Eredivisie for women's football teams. During a meeting at the KNVB headquarters in Zeist, on Tuesday, sixteen of Holland's professional football clubs pointed out that they would be interested in entering this competition with a ladies' team. These sixteen clubs include major clubs such as Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Heerenveen, Utrecht and Twente.

So... an Ajax Riot Grrrlzzz team? Yeah... Would be pretty cool.

Another nice little fact...

By the time we play our next home game at the Amsterdam ArenA (January 31st 2009) we will have been unbeaten at home for a full year. The last home defeat was on January 30th 2008 (against PSV, of course).
