The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has fined both Valencia CF and FC Internazionale Milano €155,772 (CHF250,000), and suspended Valencia defender David Navarro for seven months, following the incidents that took place at the end of last week's UEFA Champions League encounter in Spain.
(...)
In addition to Navarro, Inter defenders Nicolás Burdisso and Maicon have been suspended for six matches and Valencia defender Carlos Marchena for four. Inter centre-back Iván Córdoba and striker Julio Cruz have received three and two-match bans respectively.
UEFA said it would now ask world football's governing body FIFA to extend the suspension imposed on Navarro to international level so it also applies to any football competition - including domestic leagues and national-team fixtures - on top of UEFA club competition matches. The bans handed to the other players will only apply to UEFA club competition games.from UEFA.com
Not much after all. :dissapprove:

That is an absolute disgrace. A complete joke.
I mean: compare this to the punishments clubs will get for misconduct of their fans. It is very hard for clubs to control their fans and to always take responsibility for their behaviour. There's only so much you can do, as a club. That should be taken into consideration (remember Nancy v Feyenoord).
Players, on the other hand, are official representatives of the club. They are on the club's payrole and wear the official uniform of the club. The club can (and must) always be held responsible for their players' behaviour. Players are examples. Rolemodels for a whole generation of young kids.
After Inter v Valencia we could all see how players attempted to storm their opponents' dressing room. Everybody was kicking and pushing. Very, very serious violence from club employees, mind you: people that the club are directly and solely responsible for, at all times. Individual suspensions are not enough. The clubs deserve to be hit hard for this one.
Come on... 155.000 euros... Feyenoord got a heavier penalty for the behaviour of people they did not even sell tickets to and warned the local authorities for. In fact, most of these folks had already been punished and banned by Feyenoord (stadium ban). What more can you do, as a club? You can hardly expect Feyenoord to hire a few thousand armed stewards and patrol the border, can you? Besides, it all took place on the stands, not on the pitch itself.
In this case, the players were behaving like complete hooligans. This happened in the name of their clubs, it happened on the pitch (!) and inside the stadium (official restricted UEFA zone). What happened after Inter v Valencia is much more serious than what happened during Nancy v Feyenoord. A million times more serious.

Yes, but they're rich and famous and a big name. So of course they're held to a different standard.philippe schreef:Exactly. But for me the biggest scandal is that AC Milan was allowed to compete in the CL.
What credibility ?
There's nothing wrong with that, right? :pukey:

After the game the Belgian analyst picked out three moments from the game that summed up the "sporting spirit" of the encounter:
- When Zlatan (fairly) shoulder barged a defender and the goalie came out sticking his finger up the Inter strikers nose demanding the yellow card (which the ref gave).
- A tackle (admittedly studs first) which missed the player by a good ten inches, but the Sevilla player still did a triple sumersault dive making it look like a monstrous tackle....queue another yellow.
- A fifty fifty tackle where the Spanish player fell in a heap...then the cameraman focused in on his face and you could clearly see his body was writhing in agony, but one eye was one looking for the referee.
The point was when the game is played in this spirit, and explosion at the end is likely if not inevitable...not that either side is irreproachable.
I also echo Menno's comments on UEFA having unsound logic in punishing clubs for fan behaviour than player behaviour....complete bollocks....

Must admit, I actually have a soft spot for AZ. They normally play great football, and if I heard correctly are currently the highest scoring team in Europe?dws schreef:Congrats to AZ for knocking out a very petulant Newcastle side. Well done to Louis and his players ... a fucking top display from them - completely dominated Newcastle from start to finish. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
BTW totally off topic - F1 is in town. Practice is on today. Bloody hell. I recently moved into the heart of Melbourne and now live about 100m from part of the street track. Vrooom-Vrooom - its so freakin loud!
I think I am handling it better than the cat though... :aai:

I have a soft spot for them too....they are the best exponents of Ajax style football (including Ajax).dws schreef:Congrats to AZ for knocking out a very petulant Newcastle side. Great win, well desreved. The only concern is the lack of concentration in the last 10 minutes...against a German team that would have cost them the game. I hope they get Spurs or Benfica in the next round.

BTW Nicky Butthead should get a ban.

Damn...AZ got Bremen (away game second leg).
Can't see them winning that (yound side...moments where they lose concentration...bingo; German counter attack).
Still, I imagine Louis VG will be well motivated to show Ajax "how it's done".

Speaking as another one with a soft spot for AZ (is it contagious I wonder), that is a bit of a shame for them. Think you're right re LvG though (just a bit ;) )Manneken Pis schreef:Damn...AZ got Bremen (away game second leg).
