Been watching the Barcelona - Bilbao game tonight. At one point they wanted to have a camera shot of Luis Suarez on the bench (not playing today) - but in the same shot there was Jesper Cillesen sitting right next to him. It was nice to see them. I don't think Cillesen has gotten/will get much playing time, though unless Ter Stegen gets injured.

Cillessen plays in all the Copa matches. Spain plays two leg ties.

Sad news Piet Keizer an Ajax legend died yesterday aged 73 of lung cancer. One of the all time greats of this club from that golden era when Ajax were the best in the world with their magically football.

RIP

This happened to me something like fifteen or twenty years ago...

I happened to be in Amsterdam on Queens Day, and a friend invited me to spend the day on his boat, punting around the canals and taking in the party from a different perspective. It was a fantastic day, and here was the very best moment:

At one point, we were stuck in a massive traffic jam of boats, at the intersection of two small canals. We weren't going anywhere for a while...

Suddenly, a few people on another boat broke out in song. They had recognized Ajax legend Piet Keizer, whose boat was stuck alongside the rest of us. Within seconds, the whole crowd, everyone on all the boats, and hundreds of people on the canal banks, joined in singing "There's only one Piet Keizer!" except in Dutch of course.

It was the first and last time I personally saw the legendary player of the Golden Ajax team. He stood on the deck of his barge, smiling and clapping to the crowd as they sang for him. I felt like a poser, singing in a language I didn't know, for a man I'd never seen play. But I knew his story, and what he meant to the club. The whole scene gave me chills.

So you can count me as one more Ajax fan who had a magic moment courtesy of the late, great Piet Keizer. Rest in peace.

By the way, there was a nice article about Keizer in Champions Magazine, Aug 2010: "The Man Who Wasn't Cruyff". I searched online but couldn't find it, so here are scanned images of its pages, in case you're really keen. https://goo.gl/oGNtpd

Ricardo Kishna joined el Ghazi at Lille as he is loaned out from Lazio. I suspect he won't return to the Italian capital. Both played yesterday in a loss and Lille lie close to the relegation zone in the French league.

You're welcome.

Also a great scene in this documentary made in 1973 is how Piet Keizer and other players arrive at the training ground in 1972 with their cars.
Coach Ștefan Kovács enters the gate of stadium De Meer by bike, he didn't own a car:

De Ligt's mentor and advisor, not agent, is Barry Hulshoff.Article on Ajax showtime . de Ligt a level headed lad was approached by several agents and most of Europe wanted him but he only wants to play for Ajax and in the article says he wants to stay at Ajax for a long time. He lives just down the road from the Arena in Abcoude and Hulshoff lives there. He has been mentor and unofficial agent since 2014.

Read the other week that A1 winger Mees de Wit had a similar arrangement with Piet Keizer ,sadly that is no more.

Good to read old players advising and helping the kids.

True.
Bayern Munich approached him 2 times, Liverpool even 3 times.

The reaction of Matthijs de Ligt (and his father) to Liverpool:

'Leaving Ajax Amsterdam for FC Liverpool? What the h#ll are you thinking?' :drecul.gif: :biggrin.gif: :drecul.gif:

I remember the overhead volley he scored in the Finnish league when he was in his 30s. It was an amazing goal. He is one of the best Ajax players ever!!

One would think football players should know better (or at least have an agent who knows better) but not in this case!
