I found this whilst browsing round the net. The KNVB has decided to make the Jupiler League smaller so have written to FC Eindhoven and just told them to leave.

It seems like breathtaking arrogance from the KNVB. Has this recieved much publicity in Holland? The only comparison I can think of was with East Stirling in Scotland (where they also don't have relegation out of the league) but I don't think that was ever a serious proposition, they were just told it may be considered if they didn't improve (I think at the time they had just finished bottom for the 3rd year running with 8 points). Surely if the KNVB want to refresh the league there are better ways than this to go about it!

Anyway, it's all here

Hardly at all, to be honest... I didn't even know, but this is scandalous...

I do believe something must be done about the First Division. In a 'healthy' football league, ever First Division club should have the ambition to get promoted to the top flight. In the Dutch First Division, however, only seven or eight clubs have that ambition: they have the potential budget, the fanbase and the stadium for it. At least seven or eight other clubs, however, are too sad to get promoted. In fact: imagine that a club like FC Eindhoven or Stormvogels Telstar would suddenly have a great crop of ambitious youth player - and win the title... They would have a massive problem and they would probably go bankrupt.

That's a bizarre situation: almost 50% of the First Division couldn't even play in the Eredivisie because of their tiny, ramshackle old grounds, where the police would never allow them to play Ajax or Feyenoord.

So yeah - something must be done. A pyramid system would be ideal: it should be possible to get relegated from the First Division. My prediction is that some of the clubs would fall quite deeply, and possibly go out of business. Many 'amateur' clubs from the Hoofdklasse are much healthier (financially) and, in some cases, have better facilities and get larger crowds. Clubs like ADO '20 (from Heemskerk), Quick Boys (from Katwijk), IJsselmeervogels (from Spakenburg) and Rijnsburgse Boys could very easily replace TOP Oss, FC Eindhoven, Stormvogels Telstar and FC Omniworld, to name but a few, cos they're "bigger clubs" in many ways.

But... this is not the way. You can't just send a club a letter, asking them to leave the league and go away. That's bollocks and not the way a 99 year-old club that won the Dutch title in the past should be treated.

Yeah, that looks a little familiar.

Speaking of, what's the deal with de Ridder at Birmingham, seems like he hasn't played much (or well) going back to last season with Celta.

Birmingham manager Mcleish doesn't rate him, and i can't really blame the bloke. I've always thought De Ridder is a bit... shite, to be honest.

The Blues fans quite rate De Ridder though, if you go to the website you'll see that's one of their main bones of contention with the manager.

McLeish has said that De Ridder should be playing for a 'footballing' team. Which rather begs the question "What sport does he think Birmingham are playing now?

Typical kick and rush, second division team footie, i'd guess. Most low table EPL teams do it that way, plus Mcleish's Rangers side weren't exactly known for their 'footballing' style of play either.

In trying to find the answer on my own after posting the question, I found a quote from McLeish in effect saying that if he felt Birmingham were more of a passing team, de Ridder would be utilized more. I don't know, but even if you're not a "passing" team, you still need to advance the ball forward if you're going to score.

Regardless, 2 straight years of playing for a team that gets relegated for de Ridder, should things hold.

I like De Ridder, always had. Felt he shouldve been our man rather than Rosales, De Mul or some other guy that was being played right winged.

I dont think he fits with the Ajax team now, although I would like him back. Perhaps he should go to Heerenveen, Groningen type clubs if he returns to Holland.

If not he should play at a club like Espanyol, Benfica, or a decent "Latin style" environment I think suits his football. If he stays in the style of the UK, better to be at a more respectable, challenging place like Tottenham or Celtic.

I just hope for the best for De Ridder, don't want to see his talents wasted

Glad to see Birmingham are relegated thus no one much is going to know their away shirt stuck down in the Championship.. Our shirt is THE most famous and easily recognised in the world and I do not want any one in England thinking my shirt is connected with Birmingham.

It's always nice to see Birmingham go down.....England's 2nd city! What a laugh! Let's see if they can fall even further....after all, it's only porn money that's kept them where they were.......no they're back in the usual place for all of the other Midlands clubs!

(BUT......the saddlers Youth Policy is growing.......Championship in 2008/9; Premiership in 2010/11......they'll be at the Arena in the CL by 2012!!)

What was that noise??? It woke me from a lovely dream!!!

"England's 2nd city! What a laugh! Let's see if they can fall even further....after all, it's only porn money that's kept them where they were..."

Wrong. It's the lack of porn money that kept them where they were. The three clubs who spent the least on new players were the three that were relegated.

You've missed the point! It's the fact that the "porn" money got them out of Division 3 and hence up to the Premiership.......the lack of more "porn" money coming in has meant that they've failed.....again! One thing in their favour is that the money was mainly British and that it wasn't borrowed off the bank! Two of the "biggest" clubs in Britain are owned by the bank.......and another by a Mafia target!!!!
