Re: Grab Bag Of Random Posts
Okay, I got another one...
Driving into the City (that's San Francisco for you rural peasants) one Friday night with my wife and two friends... Some guy pulls up next to us on the freeway, sticks his head out the window and starts shouting at us, shaking his fist, etc. I slow down, thinking he's insane and might pull a gun. He slows down to match our speed and keeps shouting. So I finally lower the passenger-side window, and he's yelling "Hup Ajax! Hup Ajax!"
My license plate at the time was HUP AJAX.
Whew.

I ran into a guy in Barstow, California a few years ago with an Ajax shirt on. I gave him a compliment on it and he smiled.
That was cool.
That was cool.

That logo... "The City" with he bridge... has become super-hip and cool, but all the young hipsters probably don't know it tracks back to the SF Warriors.mako schreef:I'm old enough to remember when the Golden State Warriors were the San Francisco Warriors, and wore the coolest jerseys in the history of the NBA: a cable car on the back, and on the front the silhouette of the Golden Gate Bridge within a circle, with "The City" above it - no name, just "The City." Yeah, my oldest daughter lives in the Mission District, which is kind of hipster central, so I'm sure she sees a lot of it.ajaxusa schreef:That logo... "The City" with he bridge... has become super-hip and cool, but all the young hipsters probably don't know it tracks back to the SF Warriors.
Are you in the Bay Area? For some reason I thought you were in L.A.....

And Rick Barry was leading the league in scoring!!! They were super cool uniforms; certainly better than the Washington Bullets (a real bad choice of nicknames since we were the murder capital of the US for several years running).ajaxusa schreef:That logo... Yeah, but they were originally the Baltimore Bullets, which is at least alliterative. And the murder rate is why Abe Pollin changed their name to the Wizards, right?Orange14 schreef:And Rick Barry was leading the league in scoring!!! Re: Grab Bag Of Random Posts
Ah, Baltimore. The poor man's DC. IIRC, Baltimore had its own not-too-shabby murder rate as well... I'm in SF, and have been since 1994 when I relocated from LA, just after the World Cup. I moved to protest the most boring final ever, which was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.mako schreef:Yeah, but they were originally the Baltimore Bullets, which is at least alliterative. That was the reason it was changed. They then had a big debate about the choice of "Wizards" as some argued it had references to the Ku Klux Klan!mako schreef:Yeah, but they were originally the Baltimore Bullets, which is at least alliterative. Re: Grab Bag Of Random Posts
And yet Bullets is a much better name, imo. I mean, there are teams out there named after natural disasters (Avalanche, Earthquake, Hurricanes, Tornados) and animals (Tigers, Lions, Banana Slugs) that kill people too. And none of those names are as bad, imo, as the one the Washington NFL team currently has.Orange14 schreef:That was the reason it was changed. Re: Grab Bag Of Random Posts
Great time had at the European Challenge Cup Final (the UEFA Cup of rugby) on Friday night at The Stoop, Twickenham. Great atmosphere generated by both sets of fans, especially the French fans from Bourgoin. There wasn't that many of them there but boy did they make a great racket.
Game was free flowing one that seemed to alternate between rugby and mass boxing. In the end Northampton Saints won by 15-3 and a knockout
Shame Bourgoin resorted to such thuggery at times as they seemed to be a really skillful outfit when they decided to run the ball.
Anyway what The Saints can do, surely Ajax can do in 2009/10 - win the UEFA Cup.

I really hate those annoying, prepared, rehearsed goal celebrations. And so does this referee...

Well done, ref. That'll teach 'em.
Oh, and how cool is this Bilbao fan...?

Re: Grab Bag Of Random Posts
At least it was caused by contact with another human. A few years ago, an American football kicker (one of the Gramatica brothers, I believe) tore a knee ligament leaping into the air celebrating a field goal and missed the rest of the season.Kowalczyk schreef:Celebrating a goal...
