Huub Stevens quit as PSV coach. I just heard this on BBC World. I really didnt see this coming. I assumed they had crap players. I always thought he was pretty decent.

Also Been confirmed as Feyenoord coach for next season...

Next season should be our year. Marco will have been here a full year and should be hitting full-stride with enough preparation. Our two biggest competitors traditionally (AZ and Twente have been strong the last few years, though), are going to be in the position we're in this year. In a lot of ways we should be a step ahead of them.

Now if AZ could just follow suit this year (and repeat the turmoil they went through at the end of last season)... :ajaxsmiley.gif:

Watched some of NEC v F-word today. Feyenoord are just awful.

Rommedahl had a good game from what I saw of him. Have to say though that the NEC forwards/F-word defenders routine looked more like a Keystone Cops film that an Eredivisie game - one lot can't defend to save your life but it's OK as the other lot aren't very good at attacking either :smallgrin.gif: :drecul.gif:

For your information...

Today was a historic day in the history of football in the province of Limburg: the boards of Roda JC and Fortuna Sittard have agreed to a merger. The two clubs want to melt together. The only remaining obstacle: the Roda JC Foundation of shareholders. They can veto the plans, but the two clubs have reached an agreement and are ready to join forces.

Fortuna Sittard have never finished higher than 15th in the First Division since they went down in 2002. The club are as good as bankrupt. Roda JC, meanwhile, have been in dire straits since Nol Hendriks, the club's own 'Abramovich', resigned. A study revealed that there is not enough financial potential for two clubs in the old Mine District of South-Limburg.

This has been a point of discussion since the early 1990s, when the first plans for an 'FC Limburg' merger were launched. At the time it was supposed to be a merger of Fortuna Sittard, Roda JC (Kerkrade) and MVV (Maastricht). It never happened, because it was all too emotional. Club officials who were 'pro-FC Limburg' received death threats from fans, etc. etc. There were too many obstacles.

Now, it seems like it's really on. I do not know what the exact plans are (new club name?), but we'll hear more about that soon.

Cheers Ko, I'd read a bit about that before - keep us posted please. I'd assume that the new team would take Roda's place in the Eredivisie of course but at this rate that's far from certain....

Yeah, that's what you would expect: the new 'Roda FC' (Roda Fortuna Combination?) to play in the Eredivisie, with the First Division down to 19 teams. Starting next year the bottom team(s) will finally get relegated from the First Division, with Hoofdklasse outfits having the chance to get promoted to the First Division.

I regard this as a very healthy thing. Fresh blood for the 'basement' of Dutch professional football.

Did I see a headline that Eindhoven FC are not getting a license for next season.??

Yesterday evening I decided to watch PSV vs AZ, but I wasn't sure who I wanted to win: PSV, so that we could close in on AZ... ('you never know...')? Or AZ, because the most important thing for us is to stay ahead of PSV now?

Well - we got a little bit of both. Quite pleased with that result, actually.

And believe it or not: Volendam should have won at Twente. Seriously.

I'm pretty confident that PSV will drop at least two points tonight (at FC Groningen).

As for AZ and FC Twente: they travel to Heracles and Sparta, respectively. Two teams that are fighting relegation and normally I would not have any hopes whatsoever. But I feel optimism, don't know where it's coming from... Something tells me that AZ and Twente will not grab six points in total.

In the case of Twente there's an explanation for that, namely the well known phenomenon of 'post-European euphoria slip-up risk'.

AZ...? There is absolutely no reason to expect them to drop points in Almelo, and I'm not sure they will, but I have a strange feeling about this one.

Okay - my predictions:

FC Groningen - PSV: 2-1
Sparta - FC Twente: 1-1
Heracles - AZ: 0-0

Henk van Stee has been sacked by De Graafschap today.

Which means there are now seven head-coaches on the 2008-2009 Eredivisie HEad-Coaches' Cemetery:

Raymond Atteveld (Roda JC)
Wilem van Hanegem (FC Utrecht)
Hans Westerhof (Vitesse)
Gertjan Verbeek (Feyenoord)
Huub Stevens (PSV)
Andries Jonker (Willem II)
Henk van Stee (De Graafschap)

Which, for late February, is an all-time record!

Yep, they just loaned money from a third party, in order to be able to pay the players' wages. Seriously...

The immediately published an official statement on the club website, in which the whole thing is downplayed ("put in the correct context", as they phrased it themselves). Bottom line: they're not seriously in trouble, they're just waiting for a lot of money that other clubs still owe them. The only example given: Racing Santander purchased former Feyenoord player Ebi Smolarek from Borussia Dortmund for 4 million euros. Feyenoord are to receive 50% of that fee, once Dortmund have received it from Santander (which they haven't yet). 2 million. They didn't receive that money yet and that's why they need to loan.

For those who read Dutch: the press release is here.

I will translate the last sentence of the spokesman's explanation: "In fact, we are in the situation of having to fill some gaps because Santander are buying on tick."

Believe me: nothing was lost in translation. This is what it actually and literally says. I kid you not.

My God, that club's in the shit...

To put those 2 millions in perspective, that's less than the Van Bronchorst's annual salary : 2,1 millions (Sportweek). :biggrin.gif:

Friday evening result: De Graafschap - SC Heerenveen 2-0. That's a big surprise.

Bad news for Volendam; good news for us.

Now let's hope Twente will drop some points this weekend (they play Groningen, at home). It's about time!
