Owner Arte Moreno and the Los Angeles Angels shocked the baseball world at the Winter Meetings on Thursday morning by signing the best available hitter and best available pitcher on the free agent market, inking Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson to deals with a combined total of $331.5 million. The reason they were able to make it rain all over Dallas was thanks to a new television contract that will reportedly more than triple their current broadcast revenue.

The Angels have reached a new 20-year deal with Fox Sports worth roughly $3 billion, per Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times. That windfall of $150 million per year is not only the largest in the division, but also $100 million more per season over their previous 10-year, $500 million deal.

Television rights are very popular in southern California, as the Los Angeles Lakers signed a new 20-year deal with Time Warner earlier this year and the Dodgers and Frank McCourt have been battling Fox in court for the right to strike a new deal. The Angels were able to pounce at a time when Fox didn't want to lose all three of those teams to Time Warner, and got their huge contract.

As for the Dodgers, who won in Delaware Bankruptcy Court on Thursday the right to negotiate a new TV deal, the future could feature a similar cash infusion. "The bidding between Fox and Time Warner Cable for the Dodgers' television rights is about to start, and the over-under is $4 billion," Shaikin said.

Hoppa daar is de reactie van de Nats op het sterker worden van de Marlins, ze geven veel er veel voor Gonzalez maar ze moeten blijkbaar wat doen. Atlanta probeert Adam Jones los te weken bij de Orioles maar vooralsnog vinden we het aanbod te laag. IMO is bij de Orioles iedereen verhandelbaar al geloof ik niet dat Angelos toestemming geeft om Markakis te laten gaan.

De NLE wordt een verdomd sterke league.

Ja ik had gisteren al zoiets gelezen.

“The Wilpons have a situation in terms of medium-term debt that’s totally unsustainable,” Megdal says. “They owe $430 million in principal against their team, due back in 2014. They owe $450 million in principal due back to (TV network) SNY in June of 2015. And then they owe $25 million every six months against Citi Field. They need these minority investors right now in order to be paying short-term bills that are essentially structured as loans.”

Daar wordt ook nog gesproken over 25 miljoen elke 6 maanden die ze CF moeten betalen. Natuurlijk weten we niet precies wat er binnenkomt, zou geweldig zijn als de owners nog eens hun boeken echt moeten open gooien, maar het zal niet weinig zijn met die prijzen daar. Dit kan niet doorgaan dat is zeker en er komt altijd een gek met veel geld en een zeer groot ego die het prachtig vind om te kunnen zeggen dat hij de eigenaar van de Mets is Zeux.

Report: MLB to grant A's move to San Jose

On Friday, Billy Beane said the A's were moving forward as if they'd get a new stadium in a couple of years, and it appears one of the hurdles to that goal has been cleared.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale tweeted that the A's have been told that the team will be permitted by MLB to move to San Jose, something the Giants have opposed in the past.

During a conference call with reporters on Friday, Beane said he was confident the team would be allowed to go forth with a San Jose ballpark and "any other information I have, I'd probably rather keep to myself."

According to Nightengale, the A's have received "private assurances" from Major League Baseball and aren't allowed to talk about it publicly. However, he says the official word is expected by February.

MFY gaan nog een jaartje door met de enige echt geslaagde Nederlandse speler in het MLB. Twee miljoen met de mogelijkheid dit met 1.4 miljoen te verhogen. Volgens de Baseball reference zit hij qua verdiensten tot en met 2011 op een bijna 105 miljoen dollar. Niet slecht Andrew, niet slecht.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Hanley Ramirez says he'll accept a position switch to third base so Miami Marlins newcomer Jose Reyes can play shortstop.

When Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year deal with Miami last month, there was speculation Ramirez was unhappy about being supplanted at short. But new manager Ozzie Guillen sold Ramirez on the idea.

"I have spoken with Guillen," Ramirez said. "What we want is to win with the Marlins. We will see what's going to happen with the position switch and everything else. If it's third base, OK. Wherever they put me to win, I will do so."

With Reyes at shortstop and Ramirez at third, the Marlins become stronger defensively at both positions, and more potent offensively. Reyes hit .337 with the New York Mets last year to win the NL batting title, and Ramirez -- a career .306 hitter -- was the 2009 batting champ.

The two Dominicans are friendly, although Reyes recently said he hadn't heard from his fellow All-Star since signing.

"Between Reyes and me there is no problem," Ramirez said. "I respect him very much. He is a great person."

Ramirez spoke while taking batting practice at a Santo Domingo stadium Friday. He missed the final two months of last season with a left shoulder injury that required surgery.

"The shoulder is responding, and it's 95 percent rehabbed," Ramirez said. "I'm happy and better than ever."

He said he's excited about the Marlins' offseason spending spree, which included the signings of Reyes, left-hander Mark Buehrle and All-Star closer Heath Bell, each an All-Star.

"We are a new Marlins club," Ramirez said. "There's also a new Hanley. Good stuff is coming for next season."

Add others, like Ivan Rodriguez, J.D. Drew, Jason Varitek, Mike Gonzalez, Magglio Ordonez, Rick Ankiel, Kevin Millwood and Ryan Spilborghs. Clearly, Boras' next few weeks will help shape 2012.

Boras' cast dominates the stage, but isn't alone on it. Other free agents who will be featured in the frenzy between now and Spring Training include closer Francisco Cordero; outfielders Vladimir Guerrero and Raul Ibanez; first basemen Derrek Lee and Casey Kotchman; starters Hiroki Kuroda, Joe Saunders and Vicente Padilla, who missed most of 2011 but has been lighting it up in the Nicaraguan Winter League; and a pair of old soldiers aiming to remain on the front lines, Omar Vizquel and Tim Wakefield.

LOS ANGELES -- Former Dodgers manager Joe Torre has resigned his position as executive vice president for baseball operations of Major League Baseball to pursue a purchase of the club, MLB announced on Wednesday.

Torre will join prominent Los Angeles shopping center developer Rick Caruso, the president and CEO of Caruso Affiliated. A possible Caruso/Torre partnership was first reported by The New York Times in November.

"I have great confidence in Rick Caruso's unique qualifications and his ability to lead a successful bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers," Torre said in a statement. "In Rick I found a partner who understands consumers and fully appreciates that the Dodgers are a treasured L.A. institution. Since moving to Los Angeles, I have seen firsthand Rick's dedication to business and people in Los Angeles. I am very excited about this new opportunity."


The field of potential bidders for the Dodgers continues to grow. Among those rumored or confirmed to be part of groups interested are former owners Peter O'Malley and Fox Sports, former Lakers star Magic Johnson with longtime sports executive Stan Kasten, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Time Warner, hedge-fund manager Steve Cohen, former agent Dennis Gilbert and former Dodgers players Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser.

Posada will retire with a career .273 average. He ranks seventh on the franchise's all-time list with 379 doubles and 936 walks, eighth with 275 home runs and 11th with 1,065 RBIs.

Posada's 246 home runs as a catcher are second only to Berra (306) on the club's all-time list. Of the 13 former Major League catchers already enshrined in Cooperstown, only Berra has better career numbers in all three categories of batting average, home runs and RBIs.
