NOSEdmonton dwingt zevende duel af
Keren de dagen van glorie weer terug in Edmonton? Het zou zo maar kunnen, nu de lokale Oilers in het gevecht om de Stanley Cup door een 4-0 zege in eigen huis een zevende duel tegen de Carolina Hurricanes hebben afgedwongen.
Ooit, in de dagen van Wayne Gretzky en Mark Messier, veroverde Edmonton de cup vijf keer in zeven jaar. Die succesvolle reeks eindigde in 1990,waarna de club het telkens aflegde tegen de grotere en rijkere broers uit de Verenigde Staten.
Carolina liet zich in duel zes volledig afbluffen door de jongere Oilers. Het schotoverwicht (34-16) was veelzeggend. Fernando Pisani, Raffi Torres, Ryan Smith en Shawn Horcoff maakten de goals.

RALEIGH - Carolina Hurricanes heeft voor het eerst in zijn bestaan de Stanley Cup veroverd. De ploeg won maandagavond in de beslissende zevende play-off om de Noord-Amerikaanse ijshockeytitel (NHL) met 3-1 van Edmonton Oilers.
De strijd om het kampioenschap in de NHL was dit jaar bijzonder spannend. De Hurricanes namen een 3-1-voorsprong in de best-of-seven, maar verzuimden het de twee wedstrijden erna af te maken. De Oilers kregen daardoor alsnog de kans op een zesde titel .
De ploeg uit Carolina legde in het zevende en beslissende duel meer agressie aan de dag. Aaron Ward, Frantisek Kaberle en Justin Williams scoorden voor de Hurricanes. Fernando Pisani maakte het doelpunt voor de Oilers.
