Return of the Zenmaster:
- Jackson apparently healthy
LOS ANGELES -- Phil Jackson is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers following a reconciliation with the team that cut him loose last year after three NBA championships in five seasons.
Spokesman John Black said Tuesday the team has rehired Jackson, who was let go by owner Jerry Buss on June 18, 2004. A news conference was set for 5 p.m. ET at Staples Center. Jackson, who turns 60 in September, has had health issues in the past and underwent an angioplasty two years ago. He told ABC-TV before the opening game of the NBA Finals that he underwent a series of tests to make sure he was healthy. Jackson agreed to a three-year contract. Terms were not announced, but it's believed he'll be earning between $7 million and $10 million per year, which would make him the highest-paid NBA coach ever. Jackson's dismissal a year ago set in motion a makeover of massive proportions that proved to be disastrous.
Dominant big man Shaquille O'Neal demanded a trade and superstar Kobe Bryant opted out of his contract to become a free agent the same day Jackson's five-year run as coach ended. The futures of O'Neal and Bryant were decided the following month, with O'Neal being traded to Miami and Bryant staying with the Lakers. Rudy Tomjanovich succeeded Jackson, signing a five-year, $30 million contract, but lasted barely half a season, citing health reasons when he suddenly resigned Feb. 2. Jackson's name was mentioned as a possible replacement almost immediately despite his having written a book detailing the 2003-04 season in which he called Bryant uncoachable and made other disparaging remarks about the franchise. Bryant's reaction to a possible return by Jackson seemed lukewarm at best during the past several months. But Bryant released a more positive statement through his agent, Rob Pelinka, shortly after the hiring was announced. "When the Lakers began the search for a new head coach, I put my complete trust in Dr. Buss and [general manager] Mitch Kupchak to select the person they thought was best for the Lakers' organization," Bryant said in the statement. "In Phil Jackson, they chose a proven winner. That is something I support." With injuries playing a major role, the Lakers lost 19 of their last 21 games under interim coach Frank Hamblen to finish 34-48 and out of the playoffs for just the second time since 1976.
Jackson has coached nine NBA championship teams -- six with the Chicago Bulls and in his first three years with the Lakers -- from 2000-2002. That ties him with former Boston Celtics coach Red Auerbach for the most in league history. Jackson also has a record 175 postseason victories and is tied for 10th on the NBA's all-time list with 830 wins in just 14 seasons -- nine with the Bulls and five with the Lakers. He has a .723 regular-season winning percentage and a .717 postseason winning percentage. The Lakers were 285-125 in the regular season and 68-28 in the postseason under Jackson. But this figures to be his biggest challenge since the current team doesn't appear to have what it takes to return to elite status any time soon. The Lakers are well over the salary cap, restricting their ability to bring in high-priced free-agent talent for at least two years. Their defense was abysmal last season; they had an unbalanced roster with too many small forwards; they had virtually no inside presence on either end of the court; and they were suspect at point guard.
Jeanie Buss, the owner's daughter and the Lakers' executive vice president of business operations, publicly lobbied for months for the return of Jackson, her longtime boyfriend. She finally got her wish. Bryant's reaction to a return by Jackson has seemed lukewarm at best. Shortly after Tomjanovich's resignation, Bryant said he would "roll with it" if Jackson returned. Two days after the season ended, Bryant said he didn't care who was hired as coach, adding he trusted the track record of Jerry Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak. "Whoever they bring in here, I'm going to be ready," Bryant said. "I'm just open to whoever they feel like is going to get the job done." Buss said in early May he believed Jackson and Bryant could coexist. "Oh, definitely. No question," Buss said. "These people want to win."
Jackson spoke to several other teams, including the New York Knicks, but made it clear he would make a decision on the Lakers' job before giving serious consideration to anyone else. "He was a long shot for us anyway," said a source in the Knicks' front office who spoke on condition of anonymity. Herb Williams remains New York's coach for now, although the team has also spoken to Flip Saunders, P.J. Carlesimo, Bill Laimbeer and others. There remains a possibility that New York could pursue Detroit coach Larry Brown, who is widely expected to leave the Pistons following the conclusion of the NBA Finals. Brown has said he wants to address a health issue after the playoffs before deciding his next move. He has already spoken with the Cleveland Cavaliers about taking a job as team president. Jackson's decision to rejoin the Lakers should speed up the process of filling other job openings. There are coaching vacancies in Minnesota and Portland, and Seattle coach Nate McMillan's contract expires at the end of this month. Sacramento reportedly approached Jackson about taking over the Kings.
O'Neal and Dwyane Wade led Miami to the Eastern Conference finals, where they lost to Detroit in seven games. O'Neal is scheduled to earn $30.6 million next season, but can opt out this summer and become a free agent. He has said he wants to stay in Miami and has talked with the Heat about a contract extension.

Avoir, Adieu, Goodnight.. I'm Too Wrong, To Get Right.

With a brave boost from the backcourt of Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups, the defending champion Detroit Pistons showed the San Antonio Spurs they are prepared to duel to the end with a determined 96-79 victory in Game Three of the NBA Finals.
Returning home, the Pistons used heart, hustle and some hard fouls to stay alive in the series. They shut down both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili as they turned the tables on the Spurs, who had dominated all facets in winning the first two games.
Hamilton scored 24 points as he shook free of the shadow of Bruce Bowen and rediscovered his jumper. He sank 11-of-23 shots and opened the court for his teammates.
Billups, the NBA Finals MVP a year ago, added 20 points and seven assists as he provided direction and a spark for what had been a struggling offense. He made 6-of-12 shots, including all three of Detroit's 3-pointers.
Together, the guards helped the Pistons become the first team to hang more than 90 points on the Spurs in any of their 14 Finals games.
The Spurs were caught with their guard down in the form of Ginobili, who had strafed the Pistons for 53 points in the first two games but was limited to seven on 2-of-6 shooting.
Ginobili's aggressiveness was limited by a bruised knee and twisted ankle both suffered in the first half. He was on the receiving end of some hard fouls and was tracked better by Tayshaun Prince.
Game Four is here Thursday.
Wallace was beestachtig goed, eindelijk weer!

Big Shot Rob Comes Through Again
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 19 (Ticker) -- For "Big Shot Rob," this may have been the biggest shot of all.
Robert Horry drilled a 3-pointer with 5.8 seconds left in overtime to give the San Antonio Spurs an nerve-jangling 96-95 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
With control of the series teetering with each possession, Horry added yet another memorable clip to his career-long postseason hightlight reel and tilted the title heavily toward the Spurs, who head home with a 3-2 lead and the security of the next two games on their floor.
Known as "Big Shot Rob" for clutch shooting that has given him five championship rings, Horry scored all 21 of his points in the final 17-plus minutes, shaking off a painful shoulder injury.
"It's the playoffs, man," Horry said. "If you don't get excited about the playoffs, you don't even to deserve to be playing basketball."
"That's what he's been doing his whole career," Pistons center Ben Wallace said. "He's a proven winner."
Horry also bailed out Tim Duncan, who had 26 points and 19 rebounds but faltered down the stretch. He missed 6-of-7 free throws and a potential game-winning follow shot in the fourth quarter and missed two shots and committed a turnover in overtime.
"He pulled me out of an incredible hole that I put myself in," Duncan admitted.
Horry made 7-of-12 shots, including five 3-pointers, as he tied his career high for a Finals game. All but three of his points came with the Spurs trailing and either tied the game or provided a lead.
"That was probably the greatest performance I've ever been a part of, to see him there and to see him as calm as he was and willing to do whatever," Duncan said.
"He was unbelievable," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
Horry's last two baskets were monumental. A jumper by Rasheed Wallace gave the Pistons a 95-91 lead with 1:43 to play. At the other end, Horry drove for a thunderous lefthanded dunk, drawing a foul and injuring his shoulder, which led to his missed free throw.
"When I was going through the air, I was like, 'Please let me get there, please let me get there,'" Horry said. "I took off so far, I kind of hurt my shoulder, just an old injury that keeps flaring up."
Chauncey Billups, who scored 34 points, missed shots on consecutive possessions while being hounded by Bruce Bowen. Duncan rebounded the second miss and called timeout with 9.4 seconds remaining.
"I got a good look at it; I just could not get it down," said Billups, the MVP of the 2004 Finals.
Horry inbounded into the left corner to Manu Ginobili. Rasheed Wallace went to trap and Ginobili whipped a pass back to Horry, who rattled in his shot from the left wing, bringing the sound of silence over The Palace of Auburn Hills.
"It was supposed to be a pick-and-roll with (Manu and) Tim and I saw Rasheed bite and I said, "Oh, let me stay out here,'" Horry said. "Since I was shooting well, I wanted to let it fly. I'm the type of player, I want to win a game. I don't want to go to overtime. I'm always going to go for a three."
"I couldn't do anything in the corner with Rasheed coming to me, so I just gave him the ball," Ginobili said. "I had nothing else to do. All the credit goes to him."
The Pistons had one last chance and went Hamilton, who was guarded by the smaller Tony Parker. There was plenty of contact before Hamilton badly missed a jumper and time expired.
"It was shocking how we lost," Hamilton said.
Time also may be expiring on Detroit's championship reign. Game 6 is Tuesday in San Antonio, where the Spurs are 45-5 this season and the Pistons have lost 10 straight games since April 2, 1997.
"I have to get over this one," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "This was tough."
Ginobili had 15 points and nine assists and Parker scored 14 points for the Spurs, who for the second time in three years won Game 5 of the Finals on the road to snap a 2-2 deadlock. They also did it to New Jersey in 2003.
A series which had featured four blowouts could not have had a closer contest. There were five lead changes and eight ties in the fourth quarter, when it was a one-possession game for all but 42 seconds.
"It's two teams fighting for every inch on the court," Ben Wallace said.
Horry answered two free throws by Billups with a 3-pointer for a 79-79 tie with 3:47 left.
"One time I shot a three from way out deep and I made it," Horry said. "(I said), 'Oh, I'm ready now.' I just had that feeling."
He went strong to the basket and drew a foul, sinking two free throws, then put home a follow shot, answering baskets by Hamilton and Wallace and forging two more ties.
"He's a big-time player," Brown said. "In moments like that, he's the difference."
Billups, a clutch shooter in his own right, sank a fadeaway jumper for an 87-85 lead, but Horry drilled a 3-pointer with 1:17 remaining.
Duncan missed two free throws and Billups drove past Bowen for a hoop before Duncan was fouled again with 33 seconds left. This time, he split the pair to tie it, but failed to put home Ginobili's missed drive before the horn.
"(An) absolute nightmare," Duncan said.
"I was very upset that that we could not finish in regulation," Ginobili said.
Hamilton scored 15 points and Ben Wallace added 13, 12 rebounds and four blocks for the Pistons, who had all five starters in double figures.
The Spurs opened leads of nine points in the second quarter and seven in the third period before giving them away with a flurry of turnovers, which have been a problem for them the entire series.
