Paris St. Germain and Valenciennes settled for a 2-2 draw today in the first ever Helmond Cup match in which both teams were not Dutch. This means that 'PSG' are this season's Christmas champions in the Helmond Cup. They will carry the trophy into 2009. Their first official game in the new year is a cup match against a lower division side named Montluçon.

By the way: I don't know the fixture list for the French league, but would it - theoretically - be possible that Twente or (in the round thereafter) even Ajax win it back from Olympique Marseille in the UEFA Cup...?

Well, if PSG is able to defend the Cup succesfully (some challenge, not to loose in the next three months), they'll play Marseille the 15th of March, so in theory it's possible, if Ajax then plays Marseille in a hypothectical next Uefa-cup round (the return match in the next round is 18/19th of March!)..

There's another possibility to get it back in the Netherlands though; one of the fixtures of the next round in the French league in January contains Bordeaux - PSG; since Bordeaux is also playing in the Uefacup, in theory (in the latter stages of the Uefa-cup) they could end up playing Twente or Ajax (and in the meantime they could be opponents of Marseille, who then play Twente or Ajax..)

It's not going to be easy, but there seems to be a number of (hypothecial though) possibilities the Helmond Cup returns to the Netherlands!

It's good to be of service and also to relay news that makes people happy. I let our friends at EDS Montluçon know about the Helmond Cup know via their fans forum and they seem right up for it - their team is now playing in a European final and they didn't even know before. Also their forum now has it's first ever non French member judging by some of the other reaction I got

Very brave going on a French speaking site speaking english. If they win it could end up in the lower reaches of French football for along time!Maybe we should hope PSG win the game.

PSG's first league game of the new year is against Girondins Bordeaux, who are also in the UEFA Cup. With one French side in the Champions League and four still in the UEFA Cup it is definitely not unthinkable that the Helmond Cup will leave France relatively soon.

Adding real excitement to the competition!!!

I thought it wasn't likely that fans of a French CFA (4th level) side were going to have much of a dig at me. I guessed that the novelty vote would win out against anything else. My reading or spoken French is not too bad (in terms of short Football related conversations at least) but when it comes to writing it I'm hopeless so it had to be English. They seem a friendly bunch anyway.

Wake me up if it gets back to the Netherlands. All these matches , the geography changes, the league changes, and the fixtures are making my A-D-D kick in.
