6 DEC 2019; Ajax - Willem II; Match Day 16

Postby Orange14 » Mon Dec 02, 2019 2:20 pm

Ajax are nearing the winter break with a firm hold on first place in the Eredivisie. Three league games, one Beker, and the final CL group match are all that remain on the 2019 calendar. Willem II may be a tricky match as they are on a good run this season lying fourth in the league, not that far from PSV who seem to be in a free fall. Unlike last season, Ajax have seen some players go out with injuries and the winter break will be good for the club.

Either Traore and/or Ekkelenkamp coming on at some point, if Ekkelenkamp comes on, he can be used as either a false 9 or a number 10

Dest at RB,Mazraoui a sub .Upfront its Lang and KJH with Tadic. Wont be easy as Willem are 4th and will come at us and attack .Still hope for 3 or 4 goals as KJH will score.

Have to give Willem II credit for the way they’re pushing up and disrupting our passing through the middle. We’ll see what ten Hag does at HT.

Ajax could very well end up on the short side of this game. Another bad play in the MF let Willem II break in on goal and Dest is really lucky to still be on the pitch. Could have easily been given a RC for obstructing a direct goal scoring opportunity. I'm not sure Ajax will score given their lackluster play and Willem II good organization.

Agree with you Orange ,Dest should have been sent off. A good attacking fullback but he is weak in defence. Very lack luster attacking so far.

What the hell was the point in taking off Lang and replacing him with Siem?!

Geez. Knew it wasn’t going to happen for us when Tagliafico’s header was blocked by Siem de Jong.

Well it had to happen. Created plenty but finishing was way off tonight. They had 2 chances both mistakes from fullbacks ie penalty and then Tagliafico didn't close down Dankerlui who somehow got a shot into the net.

Only real complaint what on earth is de Jong doing coming on. Guess Lang will play Tuesday so he was taken off but what message does it give to our youth when an old injured has been comes on before Traore or even Gravenberch.

This is how Ajax lose. The give up two cheap goals on poor play that gives clear counter opportunities to the opponent. On the offensive side, they cannot get a clear shot at goal and everything is turned aside by the defenders or are easily saved by the keeper. Missing Promes and Neres clearly shows the limits of the Ajax attack. Best chance of the night was Tagliafico's hard header that hit de Jong rather than going in the net. AZ can close the gap tomorrow and Ajax have the Valencia match coming up with all to play for in the CL. Promes will be needed for that match.

It will be interesting to see what 11tegen11 comes up with in terms of expected goals for Ajax (could easily be four!!). They so dominated the play statistically. ESPN had a ridiculous number of passes with only about a dozen that were not connected. 29 shots with six on goal. Let's hope the team rebounds from this one. Strange match indeed. Both goals were scored or set up by Ajax academy graduates!!!

Player Ratings:

Onana (5.5) - had nothing to do at all and couldn't make the PK save
Tagliafico (6.5) - had a wicked header turned aside by de Jong; maybe should have done better on the Dankerlui goal
Blind (6.5) - decent passing game and came off late as Ajax pushed more men forward
Veltman (6.5) - decent match
Dest (4.5) - bad play to concede the PK and dispossessed several times
Martinez (5) - surprisingly poor match
van de Beek (6) - two good shots at goal that just didn't make it into the net
Ziyech (6) - hot and cold; all his shots hit defenders or missed the mark
Tadic (6.5) - worked hard all night and had some good passes that just were not converted
Huntelaar (6) - touched the ball maybe twice
Lang (5.5) - could not repeat his debut performance
de Jong (5.5) - had a tame header that was easily saved
Traore (NR) - on late and not a factor
Mazraoui (NR) - on late and had maybe a touch or two

Big one coming up on Tuesday. This one could go either way!

I think they wanted to go 4-4-2 and get two central attacking players into the team. Willem II made the same change when Nunnely came off. It clearly didn't work.

A set back but PSV will never make up 13 points and AZ will have a bad run where they drop points. Hope Promes is back on Tuesday and also start Mazraoui ,Dest cannot defend imo.

Lets hope Ajax form isn't dipping and that this is a one off, because the next two games are crucial, especially against Valencia

Ajax were really lucky last year as most players did not miss key matches with injuries other than de Ligt who was out of the PSV away game. Now we have two key attackers hurt.

Read comments on Ajaxshowtime ,blimey a load of negative thinking fans on there. We were always going to come unstuck one game and this was it.Looking at highlights I can see why Dest gave the penalty but Tagliafico just back peddled Dankerlui instead of going into him and prevent that 2nd . Had he stopped the goal ,as he should have done ,we would still have lost 1-0.This was a game where what ever we did you just knew we would not score.

Reading an article on Showtime saying Marin or Alvarez should have been MF ,Donny as no 10 and Ziyech and Lang wide with Tadic in the middle.KJH is a great pinchhitter but should not have started .

As for Siem coming on ,words fail me.He is sadly not good enough anymore.Traore should have replaced KJH earlier and Lang stayed on.

Right thats my say on things. Off to see my local team Worthing today and before that U19 play Feyenoord ,Ajaxshowtime have a live link.

eh this happens. more important that the team learned something and won’t repeat next week. dest has had quite a few mistakes recently. might need a little break on the beach. this is not souring up my weekend as I’m in Melbourne and enjoying the city and it’s surroundings :-)
